The Community with Closed Doors

This reflection on this Sunday’s gospel, John 20:19-31, comes to us from Congregación Luterana San Pedro y San Pablo in Costa Rica and was shared on their Facebook page.

“This image from the artist of Chinese origin HE QI illustrates perfectly the scene of the apostle Thomas placing his hand in the wound in Jesus’ side. That community is afraid and has all the doors closed. We are very familiar with mental, cultural, religious and personal doors closed by both fear and ignorance. Doors that many times we ourselves have closed for fear of those who wield power as much in our churches as in society. We always have to confess that we have not had the courage to break the silences that would have freed many from stigma and discrimination.”
